Foundation is one of the most integral parts of any flawless beauty look. If the shade is wrong or there has not been enough attention given to blending, it can ruin your whole look – and even age you. Achieving flawless foundation is a skill worth perfecting to achieve incredible, healthy-looking skin.
Here are some simple tips for the best foundation application:
1. Skin Prep for Even Coverage
Flawless makeup always starts with a great, hydrating skincare regime because it temporarily assists with plumping up fine lines and minimising the look of pore size, allowing for a more even application of the foundation. The reality is, the better hydrated your skin is, the less likely your makeup will look cakey. Start by cleansing, then applying our Daily Brightening Primer Moisturiser and, for more dehydrated skin, pop on a facial oil after your moisturiser.
Our convenient 2 in 1 Daily Brightening Priming Moisturiser Priming Moisturisers will also help improve the longevity of your makeup.
The easiest way to achieve a radiant glow is by following a regular exfoliation regime to prevent foundation clinging to dry skin. In addition to the Adorn facial polishes, our Waffle Weave Facial Cloth (used to remove your cleanser), is an effective way of gently exfoliating the skin daily.
3. Find the Right Foundation Type
It might sound obvious, but you should always use a foundation to suit your skin type. For example, a hydrating formula is perfect for dry skin, but it might not wear well on oily skin.
Adorn’s samples are the perfect way to test for this.
4. Buy Two Foundations
As the season's change, so does your complexion and skin colour, and therefore so should your foundation shade.
Don’t be tempted to wear a foundation that is too light or too dark.
5. Finding the Perfect Shade
Finding the right undertone is key to perfect shade matching. There are three key undertones: warm (golden, red, and yellow undertones), cool (beige and pink undertones), and neutral (a balance of gold and pink undertones).
To determine your undertone, look at the veins on the inside of your wrist.
Green veins = warm undertone (the yellow in your skin acts as a filter and makes your blue veins look green).
Blue veins = a cool undertone.
Blue and green veins = neutral undertones.
Always match your foundation to your neck and chest (décolletage). It is very unusual to have one consistent skin tone all over your face and body, so if your face is paler than your neck and body, then find a comfortable match that will blend well with your neck and chest.
6. For Dewy Skin
Dewy skin gives such a healthy and fresh appearance. To achieve this look, it’s important to opt for a radiant skin-finish foundation (not a matte formula) or mix your foundation with an illuminating product like our Skin Radiance Liquid Illuminiser. Alternatively, apply a loose or cream highlighter over your foundation on the cheeks, temples, and forehead. Avoid placing highlighters where you have wrinkles or deep pores.
Tip: If you have freckles on your nose and cheeks, spritz our Rosewater over the face and with a tissue gently blot over the nose and cheeks to pick up excess product and allow your freckles to peek through.
7. For Full-Coverage
Stipple (press) your chosen foundation using a light tapping motion – onto your skin. By carefully pressing the product into your skin it provides maximum coverage. The flat-shaped end of our Vegan Kabuki Brush is perfect for this technique.
Tip: Apply our Mineral Setting Powder to further mattify your look and lock it down all day.
8. For Extra Coverage Without Caking
If you need more coverage, it can be tempting to apply more foundation and layer it on your face. This can look very thick and cakey so for maximum coverage, whilst still maintaining a natural finish, apply concealer (after your foundation application) and target the areas you need more coverage this way.
Tip: After applying foundation, or for touch-ups during the day, blot excess oil away with a flat tissue (rather than adding more product), to achieve a more skin-like finish. Apply concealer if more coverage is needed.
9. For Lighter Coverage
For a dewier, more lightweight finish, mix your foundation with a small amount of our Daily Brightening Primer Moisturiser. For a more luminous finish, mix your foundation with two drops of a face serum, then apply with your hands, or for more glowing skin add a few drops of facial oil – perfect for dry skin.
10. For Luminous Skin
Mixing your foundation with an illuminiser will instantly give your skin a luminous finish, without compromising wear. Just mix one pump of our Skin Radiance Liquid Illuminiser in with your foundation for a gorgeous, glowing finish.
11. Pro Tip Alert
Apply foundation while your moisturiser is still damp on the skin. This gives the foundation a beautiful second skin appearance and helps with the blending process.
12. Best Brush Application
Start by applying your foundation at the centre of your face, where redness and blemishes are more common, working out and downwards to avoid streaks and visible brush strokes. This brush technique also avoids lifting and making any facial hair more noticeable any facial hair thant may be present.
13. The Number One Rule
Your neck is often much lighter than your chest and face and nothing looks more terrible and gives you away like a line at your jawline; so, don’t forget to blend down your neck. If you do not want to continue your foundation all the way down your neck, continue it underneath your chin and dust a bronzer on your neck instead.
