The Toxin Free From List

At Adorn, we've committed to a health and safety standard that goes well beyond what is legally required in Australia. The below Toxin 'Free From' List is made up of questionable or harmful chemicals that we do not use as ingredients in our products. While all of our ingredients are sourced with a higher standard of safety and quality in mind, it is well recognised and accepted by regulatory authorities around the world that incidental, trace levels of a chemicals may inadvertently be introduced in a cosmetic product due to the complexities of the supply chain and manufacturing process. At Adorn, we work incredibly hard to minimise - but unfortunately, can’t eliminate the potential that a product may contain trace levels of a chemical from The Toxin 'Free From' List.

It is also important to note that although the ingredient lists of mineral products and cosmetics in general may appear to be identical, they are not. There are several grades of raw mineral materials and botanical ingredients; a variety of densities, dispersions, particle sizes and opacity levels. The quality and variation in particle size, grade, and feel, all contribute to the final product. Adorn Cosmetics finely milled, high grade ingredients sourced only from ethical sources, all work together to create our unique, sell out formulations and with the purity of our premium grade, 100% natural minerals and botanical ingredients, you will also use much less product, with a little going a very long way.

Adorn's Free From List includes-

FREE FROM BENZALKONIUM CHLORIDE
A disinfectant used as a preservative and surfactant associated with severe skin, eye, and respiratory irritation and allergies. Found in: sunscreens, moisturisers. BHA and BHT: synthetic antioxidants used to extend shelf life. They are likely carcinogens and hormone disruptors and may cause liver damage. Found in: lipsticks, moisturisers, etc..

FREE FROM BISMUTH OXYCHLORIDE
If you have experienced skin irritation when using mineral makeup in the past, particularly in hot weather, and don't know why..... the inclusion of Bismuth Oxychloride in some brands of mineral makeup is the reason. Bismuth Oxychloride is actually a by-product of refined lead and copper. It has a pearlescent look to increase luminosity in mineral makeup formulations and is used as a cheap filler. Many people, including sufferers of acne and rosacea will find that using products containing this ingredient will irritate their skin.

FREE FROM DIMETHICONE OR SILICONES
Dimethicone (also called polymethylsiloxane) is a silicon-based polymer used as a lubricant and conditioning agent which sits occlusive on the skin causing possible congestion.

FREE FROM ETHYLENEDIAMINETETRAACETIC ACID (EDTA)
A chelating (binding) agent added to cosmetics to improve stability. May be toxic to organs. Found in: hair color, moisturisers.

FREE FROM ETHANOLAMINES (MEA/DEA/TEA)
Surfactants and pH adjuster linked to allergies, skin toxicity, hormone disruption, and inhibited fetal brain development. Found in: hair dyes, mascara, foundation, fragrances, sunscreens, dry cleaning solvents, paint, pharmaceuticals.

FREE FROM FORMALDEHYDE
Used as a preservative in cosmetics. A known carcinogen that is also linked to asthma, neurotoxicity, and developmental toxicity. Present where quaternium-15, DMDM hydantoin, imidazolidinyl urea, diazolidinyl urea, sodium hydroxymethylglycinate, 2-bromo-2-nitropropane-1,3 diol (Bronopol), and several other preservatives are listed. Found in: shampoo, body wash, bubble bath.

FREE FROM HYDROQUINONE
A skin-lightening chemical that inhibits the production of melanin and is linked to cancer, organ toxicity, and skin irritation. Found in: skin-lightening creams. Oxybenzone: sunscreen agent and ultraviolet light absorber linked to irritation, sensitisation and allergies, and possible hormone disruption. Found in: sunscreen, moisturiser.

FREE FROM PARABENS (METHYL-, ISOBUTYL-, PROPYL- AND OTHERS)
A class of preservatives commonly used to prevent the growth of bacteria and mold. Parabens are endocrine (or hormone) disruptors, which may alter important hormone mechanisms in our bodies. Found in: shampoo, face cleanser, body wash, body lotion, foundation.

FREE FROM PETROCHEMICALS (MINERAL OIL, PARAFFIN ETC)
A chemical derived from petroleum and natural gas.

FREE FROM PHTHALATES (DBP, DEHP, DEP AND OTHERS)
A class of plasticising chemicals used to make products more pliable or to make fragrances stick to skin. Phthalates disrupt the endocrine system and may cause birth defects. Found in: synthetic fragrance, nail polish, hairspray, and plastic materials.

FREE FROM POLYETHYLENE GLYCOL (PEG COMPOUNDS)
PEGs are widely used in cosmetics as thickeners, solvents, softeners, and moisture-carriers. Depending on manufacturing processes, PEGs may be contaminated with measurable amounts of ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane, which are both carcinogens. Found in: creams, sunscreen, shampoo.

FREE FROM RETINYL PALMITATE AND RETINOL (VITAMIN A)
A nutrient that may damage DNA and speed the growth of skin tumours when used topically. Found in: moisturiser, anti-aging skincare. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLS and SLES): SLS and SLES are surfactants that can cause skin irritation or trigger allergies. SLES is often contaminated with 1,4-dioxane, a by-product of a petrochemical process called ethoxylation, which is used to process other chemicals in order to make them less harsh. Found in: shampoo, body wash, bubble bath.

FREE FROM SYNTHETIC FLAVOUR OR FRAGRANCE
An engineered scent or flavouring agent that may contain any combination of 3,000-plus stock chemical ingredients, including hormone disruptors and allergens. Found in: all types of cosmetics.

FREE FROM TALC
Talc is considered a mineral, produced by the mining of talc rocks and then processed by crushing, drying and milling. Processing eliminates a number of trace minerals from the talc, but does not separate minute fibres which are very similar to asbestos. Talc itself is considered toxic and a known carcinogen. Adorn's mineral makeup NEVER contains talc for this reason and because of the drying effects it has on the skin.
