Episode 011

How to Parent in the Digital Age

When I think back to the early days of parenting, I have to laugh at the differences between what I thought was right then and what I care to invest in now. I had routines, rules and organic baby food. There were steps to follow and boxes to tick but this supposedly ‘healthy’ lifestyle took an unhealthy turn. I had to step back and reassess how I care for my family and my own wellbeing by allowing myself to fumble, relax, and adapt to a lifestyle that took into account my values and my children’s personalities.

And then, came the iPad.

It’s no secret that technology has set forth a range of challenges with no handbook on how to navigate them. It wasn’t long after I had my twin boys that I was dealing with tantrums over iPads, requests for phones, and too many bargaining tactics I lost count.

When do you let your kids have a phone? How do you manage conflict? How much time on an iPad is damaging and how do I teach them to understand this?

Parenting children with technology isn’t easy but overtime I’ve learnt to ‘parent through the pain,’ to take the fumbles, fights and consequences as short term sacrifices for well adjusted little humans in the long run.

In this episode, I get real about how I’ve changed as a parent over time and how my children’s varying personalities challenged me in how I discipline and listen to them. Along the way, I share the strategies and boundaries that worked for me while building trusting relationships in the process.

Parenting may feel different to everyone but we all encounter the troughs and peaks of it. I hope this episode encourages you to take your time, try new things, be open with your kids and be gentle with yourself. Remember, learning takes a lifetime.
